I was with my parents. My father was going to open a business in Winnipeg. People were saying to my mother and father how fortunate they were to get on the Titanic. I was excited because I was going on a wonderful big ship.
Does the bolded fragment mean that how fortunate they were that they were on the Titanic or how fortunate they were that they (had) got on the Titanic or how fortunate they were that they managed to board the Titanic.
Am I on the right track?
People had been saying to the writer's parents things like "You are so lucky to have successfully obtained tickets to travel on Titanic". The speaking took place before the people got on board Titanic.
