    Omitting repetition of the verb

Can someone please comment on the correctness of the following sentence:

68% of the tourists bought jewellery, 26% local lackerware and other souvenirs, and 6% other items such as food.

To me the following variant sounds better:
68% of the tourists bought jewellery, 26% purchased local lackerware and other souvenirs, and 6% bought other items such as food.

However, I would like to know if the first example is grammatically correct and if it is, if it sounds just as 'clean'.

    Thanks

Re: Omitting repetition of the verb

They are both correct. Like you, I prefer the second.

Note the correct spelling of 'lacquerware', which is not a common commodity in the UK at least.

Thank you for your helpful reply and for pointing out the misspelling!
