    carefully delineated

    49) Einstein famously said that if given an hour to solve a problem, he'd spend 55 minutes ________ it and 5 minutes on the solution. That's exactly the opposite of ______ the vast majority of executives today would do. Most of them would simply ______ a solution, _______ it and have 15 minutes to _____ for checking email. The problem is that we've become too efficient. Too much of our time is optimized ,carefully delineated for this meeting or that conference call, with no time for just thinking. We are simply ____ busy ___ innovate, and what's worse, we seem to enjoy the busyness over the thought necessary for innovation. Like a man who ______ to death in a bountiful land because he is too busy to plant, many businesses will _____ because they were too busy to innovate.
What does "time is carefully delineated"? Do you explain time to someone like schedule?

    Re: carefully delineated

It means there are rigid schedules. Lines divide the time.

    Re: carefully delineated

Doesn't it have the meaning of "explain"? If it's "explain", it sounds weird, so "divided by lines" may make more sense. Dictionaries have the definition of "explain", confusing me.

    Re: carefully delineated

No, it doesn't mean "explain." The point in this passage is that the person's time is very meticulously scheduled, with so much time allowed for each activity and each minute having something planned for it.

Definition 2 works here best: "describe or outline with precision."
