The animal that my friend likes is/are cats.

I am recently caught up on this sentence as to use is or are and a vivid explanation as to why we need to use either is or are. Also, changing the animal to animals as in

The animals that my friend likes are cats.

is this sentence correct? I understood that "the animals" can mean different kinds of animals in which we can say The animals that my friend likes are cats, dogs and hamsters. I just don't have clear thoughts at the moment so your thoughts will be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Your sentence is grammatical, bit it is odd. Why not say "My friend likes cats"?

Hello MikeNewYork thank you for your reply. That sentence should be a lot easier, this is however for the purpose of using a subordinate clause in the sentence.

    I am not a teacher.

The animal that my friend likes is cats.

The animals that my friend likes are cats.

In the first sentence what strikes you as possibly being wrong is the plural 'cats' after the singular 'is'. This is not wrong, but you could avoid the problem by saying, 'The animal that my friend likes is the cat.'
