    Question Present and past tense usage with 'thought' and 'said'

    I thought you were going next week.
    or
    I thought you are going next week.


    I thought he was a doctor.
    or
    I thought i thought he is a doctor.


    He said he needed a calculator, so i gave him.
    or
    He said he needs a calculator, so i gave him.

    'Thought' and 'said' are both in the past tense so we use 'were' instead of 'are', 'was' instead of 'is' and 'needed' instead of 'needs' to make the past continuous.

    Also:
    He said he needed a calculator, so i gave him.
    He said he needed a calculator, so I gave one to him.

    I was taught you could use present tense after "said".

    Not a teacher.

    I think you can use the simple present as long as he still needs it now.

    Not a teacher.
