    Past Perfect again.

Hi. I am reading a book nowadays. There is some paragraph where Past Perfect Tense was used.

'Buck's first day at Dyea Beach was like a nigtmare.Every hour there was some bad surprise. He had had a good life at Judge Miller's mansion'

Why Past Perfect was used in last sentence? There is no another action in the past.

'Buck had never seen dogs fight before. These dogs fought like wolves. One day......'

In first sentence in Past Perfect but no another action in the past.I think that it must be 'Buck has never seen dogs fight before'

May you please explain why Past Perfect was used here? Thanks

    Re: Past Perfect again.

'Buck's first day at Dyea Beach was like a nightmare' was in the past, it happened after 'he had had a good life at Judge Miller's mansion'.
'These dogs fought like wolves' was in the past, it happened after 'Buck had never seen dogs fight before'.

As you can see, 'fought' is past tense.
