not ... so much as ?

    Hello, teachers!

    I've found the following:

    1. When you have lived as long as I have, you will discover, I hope, that it is not what one sees on the outside, so much as what is in the inside of a man, which makes him happy and contented, or the contrary.

According to a reference book, #1 means #2.

    2. When you have lived as long as I have, you will discover, I hope, that it is not so much what one sees on the outside, as what is in the inside of a man, which makes him happy and contented, or the contrary.

    Is that so?

I hope you'll be of my help.

    Thanks in advance.

    yam.

They are exactly equivalent. The word order varies but the meaning does not.
