    To be a character

    Hello,

What I need help with is in the story extract below.

"We were in the smoke-room of the Sand-a-lea, running across the North Atlantic; and the doctor was a character. He concluded the charging of his pipe, and lit it; then settled himself, and began to express himself more fully."

I am not sure if the word "character" used in this context means the doctor was "the main character of the scene" because he was the narrator and the boys listening to him his audience.

The source: The Derelict by W.H.Hodgson, 1912

Thank you if you try and help.

    Re: To be a character

In this context, the word means a person with distinctive qualities that makes him diferent from, and possibly more interesting than, most people.

Are you familiar with OneLook Dictionary Search? It's an excellent resource and I've paraphrased this definition from the Macmillan dictionary at that site.

    Re: To be a character

Thanks for the tip. If I am in need of help in English, I look up in thefreedictionary.com. And if it has failed, my last resort is here.
