    was swimming

I heard this sentence, but I think it is grammatically wrong.
When I was on holiday, I was swimming in the sea every day.
    Am I right?
    Thanks.

    Re: was swimming

    [Not a teacher]

When we talk about repeated actions in the past, we use simple past (swam), but the past continuous is also possible if we want to express the idea of repeated actions for a limited or temporary period in the past.

When I was on holiday, I swam/was swimming in the sea every day.

Moreover, the past continuous is used when the repeated action is also the background to something happening at the same period.

I'm still confused. Which one is grammatically better?

    Re: was swimming

Both are correct. It will depend on what you are trying to express.

The action went on in the past: I swam in the sea every day.

The action went on in the past, but only for a limited and temporary period of the past (when you were on holidays): I was swimming in the sea every day.
