    Coordinating and Subordinating Conjunctions

Hello ! I wanted to ask you something. In French or in English, I've never understood what's so different between the coordinating and the subordinating conjunctions. I know the list :
    Coordinating Conjunctions

    • And
    • But
    • Or
    • Nor
    • For
    • Yet
    • So

    Subordinating Conjunctions

    • after
    • although
    • as
    • as if
    • as long as
    • as much as
    • and all the other ones

But I don't understand why there are two kinds of conjunctions, to me, they all are words that link two sentences and make them united like : I like the chocolate. It is good : I like the chocolate because it is good. To me, all conjunctions are meant to do that, to link two sentences so why should we seperate them. What's different between "so" and "after" ?

I know when we use them, but why are they different ?
    Thanks a lot :)

    Re: Coordinating and Subordinating Conjunctions

First of all, conjunctions do not connect sentences. They may have both been sentences once. But once they are connected, they are clauses. A coordinating conjunction connects two equal independent clauses. Subordinating conjunctions connect two unequal clauses. One is a main clause and the other is a subordinate clause. The main clause can stand on its own, but the subordinate clause cannot.
