Smile who always said things like they were

    Hello.
I don't quite follow what the underlined part below means in this context.
Does it mean 'Grandma has constantly been saying that' or what?
    Please help. Thank you.

-----(The sentences below is from a children's novel)
"It was my fault! It was the bully, Mom! It wasn't anyone else's fault but mine!"
Mom and Dad didn't seem to know what to answer.
"Instead of sitting there like two idiots," said Grandma, who always said things like they were,
" you should be praising Julian for this admission!"

And spoke the truth plainly- she didn't try to soften unpleasant things, for instance. She called them idiots because that's what she thought they were.

Frindle2, I have added the source to your first post for you. In future, please give the name and the author of any quote you use.

Thank you. I'll keep that in mind. It's from <Wonder: Julian Chapter> by R.J Palacio.

Re: who always said things like they were

I have already added the name of the book and the author in post #1. Unless you have a strange different version of the book, it is not called "Wonder: Julian Chapter" as you wrote. It's called "Julian: The Wonder Chapter". It's important to get the title right.
