    Present Perfect.

    It's from a book.

Have 2,500 McDonald's restaurants now been opened worldwide?

Why was the word "now" used?

    Re: Present Perfect.

    I am not a teacher.

It reinforces the idea of 'up to this time' or 'so far'.

Without the 'now' it is less precise, and I would be left wanting to know, when?

    Re: Present Perfect.

I think the word "now" in the sentence in question is superfluous. (Now you have a new word to look up. )

    Re: Present Perfect.

'Now' may be superfluous. It depends on the context. For example, 'now' is needed in the illustration below.
"A McDonalds has just opened in Iguaz˙. There have now been 2,500 McDonald's restaurants opened worldwide."

    Re: Present Perfect.

    It depends.

(In your example, Raymott, the word "now" is not superfluous.)
