    doing scales

What does "doing scales" mean in the following? From <<Leading the Life You Want>> by Steward D. Friedman.

The most revered performers never stop trying to become more skillled at their craft. ... They exercise the basics, doing scales regularly to keep their technique sharp.

    Thank you.

Ah, scales and arpeggios. The bane of my life as a young flautist.

    Re: doing scales

I managed to avoid ever being forced to do them as a guitarist or singer. I only did them on the flute because I was taking flute exams.
