    grow charnel?

Hi, people. I am glad to get in touch with you again.
Could anybody paraphrase the underlined sentence?
"In all that I endured there was no physical suffering, but of moral distress an infinitude. My fancy grew charnel.I talked "of worms, of tombs and epitaphs."
Furthermore, does "talk of" here mean to talk about?

    Re: grow charnel?

His imagination became darker and influenced by death. Presumably, the person's conversation reflected this obsession with death.
