    could you

Could you please tell your dog not (to?) bark on me?

Is 'to' needed or not, please?
    Thank you.

    Yes, 'to' is needed.

    Re: could you

Hello Rover and many thanks, as usual!

It seemed to me that 'to' is needed, but then I thought of another sentence:

    "Could you pleas not smoke"

"to" is not needed here, right?

    Thank you.

    Re: could you

Oh, I think I see the logic:

    Could you please tell
    Could you please not smoke

Could you please tell (what?) not to bark

I got it. And hope that I am correct this time.

    Many thanks!

    Re: could you

    1. Could you please not smoke?
    2. Please refrain from smoking.
    3. Please tell that dog not to bark at me.
    4. Please tell that dog not to smoke here.

    Re: could you

There is no need to write a new post just to say "Thanks", Irina. It makes us think there is new information or a follow-up question and we spend time opening the thread. Simply click on the "Thank" button at the bottom left-hand corner of any post you find helpful.

    It saves everybody's time.
