    Ruins of ancient city

"If the tsunami hadn't come, they wouldn't have been able to find the ruins of ancient city". Is it correct?. What does "If it were not for the tusami, how long it would have taken them to find the ruins of city"? I think first sentence can work with "Had done" right?

    not a teacher

That's not correct, tedtmc. An article is required before "ancient city".

But what does "If it was not for tsunami" and why we can't use "Had done" it happened in past.
