Could we eliminate "of" in this sentence?

    Hello!

    I've read this article [https://www.usingenglish.com/comprehension/7.html ].

The sentence makes me so embarrassed is "The heart of this empire during the 12th century was the ancient capital of Angkor Thom".
as I know, Angkor Thom is already the name of the ancient capital, so why there is the word "of" used between "the ancient capital" and "Angkor Thom". What is the function of word "of" here, could we eliminate it, just write simply " the heart of this empire during 12th centruy was the ancient capital Angkor Thom" instead.

Thank you a lot in advance!

    Welcome to the forum, Anmia.

I agree with you: 'of' should be eliminated.

Shouldn't there be a comma after capital if there is no 'of'?

    - the ancient capital, Angkor Thom

A comma there is optional, Ted.
