An assembly hall is a multi-purpose building where people gather for various functions, events or even parties.
An auditorium is a place where lectures and performances are held.
The uses of the two types of building overlap each other. An auditorium needs to be acoustically designed to facilitate its use. It has stepped floor and seating to give the audience a good view of the stage whereas the floor of an assembly hall is flat.
