"saw that their hero (was) dead"?

"When the other Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran."
When the other Philistines saw that their hero dead, they turned and ran.

Would the second statement be ungrammatical if there were no an auxiliary, please?

    It has to be

"When the other Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran".

Another possibility is "When the other Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran", but I don't like that as much.

You could say "When the other Philistines saw that their hero had died, they turned and ran.

'The other Philistines saw their dead hero.'
Does it mean that they saw his ghost?
    Not a teacher.

No. They saw the dead body.
