    for protecting

    Are these sentences correct:

    1) He said he bought the gun for protecting his family.

    2) He said he kept the gun for protecting his family.
    3) He sais he had a gun for protecting his family.

    I think they work. 'To protect his family' would also work. I think 'to protect his family' and 'for protecting his family' would both mean the same.
