    'Obese students'?

    Hi,

Can 'obese' be used before a noun? Is there any other word meaning the same which is used in semi-formal texts? (I suppose we should not use 'fat' that openly, am I right?!)

Yes, it can. Bariatric is creeping into use, and overweight still works.

There is nothing wrong with "fat". It is actually gentler than "obese".
