Hi,

Choose the correct option.

He had an urge to eradicate wrong beliefs.
(a) remove (b) destroy (c) rectify (d) amend
I'm confused. It could be either "a" or "b" but I go for "a".

Untaught88, I would go for a) as my first choice but you could make an argument for b). It's not a fair test question.

Kumar Nadimuthu, why did you change the (correct) wording of the original statement?

I understood that "eradicate" means "destroy". I thought that would be simple present tense. I am very weak in tenses.

If you could amend (change) them you could possibly make them right beliefs, couldn't you?

I was referring to the fact that you changed "He had an urge to eradicate ..." (correct) to "He urges to eradicate ..." (incorrect).

In that case, please wait longer than four minutes before suggesting an answer you are not sure about, and don't forget to state you are not a teacher.

Remove and destroy are too strong words, which are not realistic when you talk about people's beliefs
If you could amend beliefs, you could also rectify them.
I would prefer to dispel beliefs.
But of course, this is not answering the question.

In my view, the test questions were made by someone who is not a native English speaker, or is the worst writer of our time. Eradicating incorrect beliefs may be a noble cause, but I would not use the word "urge" in this context. It sounds like he wants to scratch his bum. How about He resolved to combat false beliefs or He was committed to fighting against superstition?

"Eradicate" is very strong. I would choose "destroy." ISIS is out to eradicate "false beliefs."

How about:

Knowing that he was right and they were wrong, he had a strong desire to change the beliefs of others. He simply couldn't tolerate people believing the wrong things. So he decided to change people's beliefs.
