    Taken hostages

"We were taken hostages". "We have been taken hostages". "Animals are taken hostages at circuses". Are these sentences correct?

    Re: Taken hostages

    "We were taken hostage."

It's not plural, it's an adjective.

Now, if you are the one doing the action, then you would say that "after we robbed the bank, we took hostages to ensure our getaway."

    Re: Taken hostages

"Hostage" serves as a modifier in the sentence. Not a noun. So there is no need to make it agree in number.

    Contrast:

"We were hostages" with "We were taken hostage."

In the first, it's a noun. Since "we" is plural, "hostages" must also be plural. In the second, it's a modifier.

Ok, "We were taken hostage". "We have been taken hostage" but "We are hostages".
