    Is this sentence grammatically correct?

"Sometimes we have to make a long journey to discover, that things we were looking for were always with us, in our homes"? Is that correct? Or the end should be rather: ...had always been with us...? Is there any better way to express this thought?

Sometimes we have to make a long journey to discover, that things we were looking for were always with us, in our homes.

You started with the present tense and changed to the past tense. It is better to continue using the present tense for a general statement.

I would change the sentence to:

Sometimes we have to make a long journey to discover that the things we look for have always been around us, just that we have been taking them for granted.
