    Comfy conscience

    Hello,

Can anybody help me to understand the bold text?

"I got to know him, and we became enormous friends; for I soon found that he would never turn his abilities towards any new war-contrivance; and so, you see, I was able to enjoy my friendship with him, with a comfy conscience--a thing our chaps are not always able to do in their friendships."

Is it the same like a quiet/clear conscience?

    Baumoff Explosive, W.H.Hodgson, 1912

    Thanks

    Re: Comfy conscience

His conscience wasn't bothering him. (Mind you, I've never run across that phrase before.) Yes, I think you're right.

    Re: Comfy conscience

You are both correct. It does mean a clear conscience.
I'm not a teacher of English, but I have spoken it for (almost) all of my life....
