    too many books

    Can one use:
    1) Too many books are bad for you.
    instead of:
    2) Reading too many books is bad for you.
    or
    3) Having too many books is bad for you.

I think '1' works in spoken English, but I am not sure it will work in formal English.

    Gratefully,
    Navi.

    Re: too many books

If the listener of 1 is a deliverer, s/he will carry instead of read or have the books.

    Not a teacher.

    Re: too many books

Thank you very much Tdol and Matthew,

So it changes the meaning in the sense that there is no verb in '1' and only the context would tell us what verb has been ellipted?

    Gratefully,
    Navi.

    Re: too many books

If the listener is a librarian, the omitted word may be 'Sorting'.

    Not a teacher.

    Re: too many books

To me, it could suggest that there are too many books that are harmful to us in some way.
