Is this a participial construction? Or a simple sentence?

Hello, teachers! I have a question about the sentence:

    a) He was very sick, in what turned out to be the last week of his life.

I think that this is just a normal sentence, which I think is along the lines of:

a') He was very sick in (what turned out to be) the last week of his life.

But someone told me that it is a participial construction and can be rephrased as:

a'') He was very sick, being in what turned out to be the last week of his life.

    And that it originally is:

a''') He was very sick, and/as he was in what turned out to be the last week of his life.

So, is this a participial construction?

I have found similar sentences on the Internet:

    b) We want to especially thank the three caregivers who stepped into our lives, in what turned out to be the last few days of my Dadís life.

    c) Around 44 junior athletes took part, in what turned out to be very competitive days athletics.

    d) Soon after his arrival, he wrote to his father, in what turned out to be the last known letter he wrote to him.

I am pretty sure that (d) is not a participial construction (since it cannot be rewritten as "... he wrote to his father, being in what turned out to be the last known letter..."), but what about the others?

Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!!

I don't see a huge difference in meaning, but I would go along with your explanation.

Hello, Tdol! Thank you for the reply, but I am sorry I don't really understand. Do you mean, you don't see sentence (a) as a participial construction?

And may I ask you one more question, if you don't mind: Can a participial construction start with a prepositional phrase? For example:

    e) As he was in a great hurry, he left home without saying where he was going.

I think this can be rephrased as:

e') Being in a great hurry, he left home without saying where he was going.

using a participial construction. But is it possible to rewrite it as:

e'') In a great hurry, he left home without saying where he was going.

    or maybe:
e''') He left home without saying where he was going, in a great hurry.

    ... leaving out the "Being"?

Is it okay to leave out "being" and start a participial clause with a preposition, like in this example?

In other words, if you see a sentence like (e'') or (e'''), is it possible to see it as a participial construction?

    Thank you for your patience.
