    ing-forms

    Hello,

Could you tell me what's wrong with the sentence "I was lying looking at the tiles laid in geometrical patterns" ? Is "I lay looking at the tiles..." much better?

    Thanks

    Re: ing-forms

"I was lying" is not the past continuous form of "I lay".
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

    Re: ing-forms

Lie and lay are so commonly confused!

There is nothing wrong with "I was lying (on the floor, I assume), looking at the tiles."

To say "I was laying" is wrong.

However, If you want the past tense of "I lie" then "I lay" is correct. Yesterday, I lay there for hours, just ooking at the tiles.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
