    Down a turning off ...

    Hello,

Can anybody explain to me the meaning of the bold text?

"He was seen down a turning off the square."

    John Metcalfe, Convalescent, 1928

    Thanks

Re: Down a turning off ...

Well, how I see it, if someone was seen down a turning off the square, it means he went down the street (a turning), which is leading to someplace away from the square. Hope that helps. Cheers.
