    he screamed, "Nokomis!"

One day, a boy visited his grandmother, Nokomis. When he was going in, he noticed a spider spnining its web by a window. Taking off his shoe, he screamed, "Nokomis!" With his shoe in his hand, he rushed over to kill the creature...

Is it possible to call your grandmother by her name? I don't think it's possible even in the western culture. This passage looks weird!

I agree; it is weird. Not only the name, but also the extreme reaction to the spider. Spiders are everywhere.
