    comma before as

Hello, I am researching the comma use with the word 'as' and I am not sure if I should use a comma before 'as' in this sentence. It's a long sentence so I feel there needs to be a pause, but the sentence also sounds like a simile to me (?) which would mean I should omit the comma?

    In our hom
e , cleaning the stove means to clean every surface by pouring water over all surfaces as was done by my mother.

    Re: comma before as

I would put a comma there. It's not a simile. You need to use no space before the comma and one space after.

    Re: comma before as

    Hello again.

Can someone please give me a reason as to why there should be a comma before as? Although I do think that the sentence does sound better with a pause, I think it sounds just as fine without it. Thank you.

    Re: comma before as

In my opinion, a comma is optional there.

I would not use one in writing, but if I had to read the sentence aloud I would have to take a breath there, and a comma would reflect that.
