Cross-posting isn't an issue, teechar. It's good for the OPs to have more than one response.

    Re: Transfer Certificate

I find the opening rather wordy.

    Dear Sir

We are moving house next month and we need to find a place for our son at a school nearer our new home. I would be very grateful, therefore, if you would issue a Transfer Certificate for [name etc of son].

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your help and support over the two years that our son has attended your school.

I wish you and all your staff success in the future.

    Yours faithfully

    [Your name]
