I am not sure what you are trying to say. Where was the key?

    Re: preposition

It is not clear what it is you are trying to say. Was he looking for the key all over the place and it was still in the door? Was he looking for the key in his pocket or bag as he was walking towards the door and then found it in his bag?

    Re: preposition

    I am not a teacher.

The key could have been behind/near/nowhere near/stuck to/broken off in the lock of the door, and so. The answer could be anything.
