    account for

    Hi,

Anyone please could tell me what does "account for" mean here?
I know the definitions of accounf for, I just can't realize it in these sentence:

It is said that vinyl composition tile (VCT) accounts for more square footage than any other category of resilient flooring.

    Thanks

    Re: account for

It means to represent a number or an amount.

Here it means that VCT is the top flooring material category in terms of square footage.
