    Smile evil was the hour

Hello. Would you please tell me what the underlined phrase mean?
Does it mean the thing that she saw, and loved, and wedded the painter was unfortunate for her?
These are from <The Oval Portrait> by Edgar Allen Poe.
    Thank you.

    -------
She was a maiden of rarest beauty, and nor more lovely than full of glee.
And evil was the hour when she saw, and loved, and wedded the painter.
He, passionate, studious, austere, and having already a bride in his Art.

    Re: evil was the hour

"Evil was the hour ..." is a quaint way of saying "The hour was evil ..."
Compare, "Beautiful she was, and talented."
