DIRECT CONTRAST with although

- Although I like pop music, my brother likes jazz music.

I tried to write such a sentence because I have difficulty in deceding whether I should put 'whereas or while' instead of 'although.'

"While" is better.

Forget about the word "whereas" unless you are writing a legal document.

Of course. I was responding to Dave. (We've been discouraged from posting Quotes, so inevitably this type of misunderstanding will occur). But it's a very short thread, so you should be able to see the logic behind my reply. Not every post is a reply to the original poster. In this case, it can't have been, because I referred to you in the third person. You did mention 'whereas'.

I'd only use 'although' when the subject remains the same — in this case 'I'.

'Although I like pop music best, I'm also very fond of jazz.'

I don't necessarily agree with Rover here. The sentences you quote are good.
"Even though I told him not to, he still went ahead and did it." OK
No, the problem with 'although' in your original sentence is that that is not how to use "although/even though/though/notwithstanding". Use 'while' or 'whereas'. I think we can all agree on 'while'.

There's a difference in meaning. 'Although' (and the rest from above) gives the suggestion that what follows is somehow surprising or not what you'd expect. "Although I'm small, I'm very strong". 'Whereas' and 'while' don't have this connotation. There's nothing surprising or contrary about you and your brother liking different kinds of music, so 'although' is not the right word.
