    Shafting ...

    Hi,

Can anybody help me with the bold text?

"Thus would go pure thought could it be ever rid of the emotions that weigh it down, shafting."

Am I to understand the pure thought is not only weigh down by the emotions but also pinned/tacked down to the ground (metaphorically, of course) by them?

Leonard Cline, The Dark Chamber, 1927

    Thanks

It makes no sense to me.

It seems to me the emotions not only weigh the pure thought down but also they pin it down to the ground with a shaft/spear, but I am not certain at all and that is why I am asking.
