    What was that back there? And I say: I don't know what that was/is.

    Something made a very loud noise and people started shouting at each other 5 minutes ago as we were walking in the parking lot. When we were seated in the restaurant my sister asks me:

    What was that back there? And I say:

    I don't know what that was/is.

    Are both okay here?

    NOT A TEACHER
    I'd personally use "was" as it already happened and it's done.

    I'd just stick with "I don't know". If I had to be more specific, I'd say "I don't know what it was", as Zkiller said.
    Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
