    defy

Hi, what does mean the underlined part of this phrase:

Green building means different things to different people—it is a multifaceted concept that lends itself to numerous interpretations. Likewise, green building materials defy easy definition; they are eco-friendly and are composed of renewable, rather than nonrenewable, resources.

    Thanks

(Green here means eco-friendly, not the colour green, of course.)
If something "defies easy definition", it is difficult to define. The underlined sentence begins with 'Likewise', so that means that green building - in the previous sentence - also defies easy definition.
