    Releasing one's footsteps

"The clatter of a cart lumbering up from the quarry released my footsteps—and I hurried back to
the city." Krzhizhanovsky, Autobiography of a Corpse

I cannot really understand what's the meaning of "release" here. Could you help me out?

    Re: Releasing one's footsteps

Perhaps it means it made the footsteps heard. It's released so that people can hear it. 'I hurried back to the city' must have meant running and sometimes running could be heard by the thudding of footsteps. Just a thought. Not a teacher.

I think it means that the sound of the cart acted as a trigger, or motivator for the character to walk/run hurriedly back to the city.

    Re: Releasing one's footsteps

It looks like a poor translation into English to me.
