    The meaning of 'flare'

"To live as a wolf means to take everything, even the footprints, to devour every last trace. As for ghosts, they flare and fade in tracelessness." Krzhizhanovsky, Autobiography of a Corpse

What's the meaning of 'flare' here? It doesn't seem like it means 'to burn brightly.'

    Re: The meaning of 'flare'

Why do you think "flare" might mean "to burn slightly" (even if you think that definition doesn't fit here)? Where did you find that definition?

    Re: The meaning of 'flare'

I meant 'brightly.' Sorry. However, it's obvious that this is not the meaning here.

    Re: The meaning of 'flare'

Flare (verb): to burn slightly, but usually for only a short time or not steadily. Example: the match flared and went on.

I just copied that from the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary.

    Re: The meaning of 'flare'

If you take "to burn brightly" metaphorically (rather than actually referring to fire), it fits quite well. A ghost might appear very clearly or distinctly and then fade away. We sometimes say that people "burn brightly" when they're alive.

    Re: The meaning of 'flare'

We use "flare (up)" in medicine to refer to a disease that suddenly appears or reappears. This may be the meaning that the author intended.
