    put up

    Hi there,
"Put up" is a phrasal verb, which means "to stay somewhere for the night", of course "put up" has a lot more meanings. However, what would be the single word for "put up" ? Is it "reside" ?

We can use "put up" for colloquial English but for formal English we (I think) most of the time do not use phrasal verb. That is why I actually want to know a single and formal word of some phrasal words like "put up".

Thanks a lot. One more question Bhaisahab; we use phrasal verbs for colloquial English and single verbs (which are not phrasal verbs) for written English, am I right? Is it more natural when we use phrasal verbs in speaking situations? Or do you think whichever type of verb we can use wherever?

We can use phrasal verb in either speech or writing. Some are slang and they should be reserved for colloquial use.
