Replacing me with I is grammatically correct, but it is a usage that is rarely seen or heard nowadays.

"But" is a conjunction. Prepositions are in, at, on, of, etc.
It is not wrong to use "I".

In the OP's sentence, "but" is a preposition, so "I" would be incorrect.
