    chosen for the job

    1) He was the man to be chosen for the job.

    Does this mean:

    a) He was the man that had to be chosen for the job.
(The people who were choosing someone for the job had to chose him. Maybe they did, maybe they didn't. Maybe 'we' were doing the choosing and we had to choose him.)

    b) He seemed destined to be chosen for the job. Either he was chosen for the job, or something out of the ordinary happened.

    c) He was chosen for the job.

    d) He will be chosen for the job. He has not been chosen yet, but he was (and still) is the man to be chosen for the job. The speaker places himself in the past and simply says that he was at that time the man to be chosen for the job. But the fact is that he is still that man.

    Gratefully,
    Navi.

    Re: chosen for the job

"Chosen for the job" is an adjective phrase. When you add what I used to call "copula verbs" you add unknowable context.
