    Very unfortunate.

I'm sure someone with medical experience will chime in but the terms which spring to mind are "Persistent Vegetative State" (which I believe used to be referred to as "brain dead") and the out-of-favour on PC grounds "vegetable".

One has to be careful about "permanently". I had a good friend who was on life support for a long time and then in a coma. He suddenly woke up three years later.
