    was FIRST played

    Hello,
    I have a silly question.
But it's confused me a lot and was wondering, could you explain , PLEASE, why in the sentence:

The football was FIRST played by the British
FIRST is in between the two verbs?

And is it possible to put it after them and if not WHY?
is there some kind of rule I don't know about?

    thank you in advance
    Elena

    Re: was FIRST played

Adverbs are very flexible; they can go in various places.

Football was first played by the British.
Football was played first by the British.
Football was played by the British first.

(Note: We don't say 'The football' when it refers to the game.)

You're welcome, but you don't need to make a new post to say thank you. You clicked on the 'Thank' button and that was all you needed to do.
