My remit as an academic writing tutor is to help our HE home students with planning/ structure/ referencing etc of dissertations and reports. I have noticed in the last couple of weeks an upswing in the number of international students booking appointments with me.
The issue I have is that these sessions invariably turn into proof reading which not only goes against the directives set down when I took on the role, it also doubles the amount of time required to help.
My question to you is 'how do I avoid just correcting their English?' do you have any tips/ tricks or resources that I could use to streamline my sessions with these students without just straight out highlighting sentences and telling them how it should be written? I want to be helpful but I do not want to do their work for them.
...any and all advice gratefully received!
