    Could you please tell me which is the correct way of saying the following:

    This needs fixed

    This needs to be fixed

    or are they both correct?

    No, you can say 'This needs to be fixed.' or 'This needs fixing.'.

    Thankyou...you have settled a disagreement...unfortunately for me I am wrong! I always say things like 'This needs doing, this needs ironing', etc etc and my friend keeps correcting me.
    I hate being wrong!

    There is a diference here though, and I don't think you're wrong if the examples you gave are anything to go by.

    This needs doing

    This needs ironing


    Both of these are perfectly fine :wink: . They are different to your original question though, because you could not say:

    This needs do (WRONG)
    This needs iron (WRONG)

    need\want + -ing can be used to replace a passive infinitive after the verb.
