excess part of sentence that makes it more complicated

    Please read the following sentence.

"She is not the girl that her mother wanted to be."

If I say- She is not the girl that her mother wanted, it makes sense to me. When "her to be" has been added to it, it seems awkward to me. Please tell me how "her to be" is related to rest of this sentence. What does the sentence mean, when "her to be" is added to this sentence?

    Not a teacher

"her to be" changes the meaning.

    Try:

"She is not the daughter that her mother wanted her to be."

You need "her" to refer to the daughter.

Her mother wanted her daughter to be something different or something better.

A more natural sentence would be:

She was not the daughter her mother wanted her to be.
