    Is this sentecn correct?

I've read a sentence in a Greek mythology book. It's about Poseidon.
The sentence, "whenever he was angry the waves would rise mountain high". Is this sentence correct? Somehow I just feel something wrong.
    My question:
    1. Is "high" adv which is for "rise"?
    2. Shouldn't it be "the waves would rise as mountain high" or "the waves would rise as high as mountain stands" ?

    Thank you

"Mountain high" is acting as an adverbial modifying "rise".
